Some more of my hobbies are underwater fish-watching, science fiction, beating the Wall Street markets, and dining out with my 'significant other'. (If you have a favorite restaurant in Westchester, NY, I'd love to hear about it.)

Background: I taught for a year in upper Manhattan. The kids were great, but I realized I wanted to be part of the world economy. I wanted to make something I could hold in my hands, and sell to lots of people.

With that in mind, I joined a small company where production doubled every six months. We soon became a very large multinational company.

I ran the service labs. And since the research labs kept asking for my technicians, I ended up hiring and training all the technicians, too.

My apartment on the north edge of New York City is near a big park, golf course, lake and wildlife area, so even though there are a lot of apartment buildings and private houses, there are also a lot of trees. I do my gardening on a 6 by 12 foot balcony (2 by 4 m). The bluejays like to bury acorns among my Gaillardia, so I occasionally discover that I'm growing my very own oak tree. For a while, anyway, until I get sensible.
------
When the balcony door is left open, some of my feathered friends are apt to wander into the living room. Like that pair of house hunting House Finches. Just looking!
------
Or the strange parakeet sitting on my TV. He didn't want food or water so I got him on my finger and set him on the balcony railing with a 'Good-bye'. I've always had pets around, dogs, cats, birds, fish, rats, turtles, but I wasn't ready to take on a parakeet right at that moment. The only problem was, every time I put him out and turned my back he'd hop down and follow me, walking back into the living room on his little bird feet.
Whoever finally took him in is lucky. He was so darned cute.
------
Of course the Red Tailed Hawk didn't come inside. When I took my morning step-out to check the weather, there he was, sitting on the railing at the far corner (far? 10 feet is not far!). He looked as big as an eagle to me, with the dagger stare to match!

I froze so I wouldn't scare him away. Hah! This dude had been looking back at bird-watchers and TV cameras since the day he hatched. He just stared me down until I backed off HIS balcony. New York's re-introduced red tails are spoiled rotten.

He spent about 45 minutes looking down at the pigeon supply and checking out the neighborhood. And throwing me dirty looks through the living room windows. (Well Excuse Me!!) I was wondering what I'd do if he decided to set up housekeeping on my balcony. But finally, I looked and he had gone, and I never got to see those great wings unfurl!
