cell fusion is a useful tool in biotechnology. It is used in:

(i) to study the control of cell division and gene expression,

(ii) to investigate malignant transformations,

(iii) to obtain viral replication,

(iv) for gene or chromosome mapping and for

(v) production of monoclonal antibodies by producing hybridoma (hybrid cells between an immortalised cell and an antibody producing lymphocyte), etc

Cell fusion is a process in which we attempt to combine the protoplasm's of two cells. These two cells could be of the same or different types. Most often, different cell types are used. The principle behind this process is that by fusing two cells of different types, the newly created hybrid cell will have properties of both the parent cells. The process begins by placing the two cell types in a sterile container in the presence of a fusigenic agent - a substance that facilitates cell fusion. A commonly used one is PEG. Cell fusion has been successful in producing hybridoma cells - produces by the combination of mouse B cells and myeloma (tumor) cells. The result is immortal cells that secrete monoclonal antobodies.

the first animal-plant cell fusion was reported about 20 years ago, in which avian erythrocyte and tobacco protoplast were fused using high pH, high Ca2+ concentration and raised temperature.
