The term "pit" or "pit bull" is not an actual breed of dog. The term "pit bull" is a generic term used to describe the physical characteristics of up to a dozen different breeds, most commonly the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT), American Stafforshire Terrier (AST) and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (SBT).

Razors Edge (RE) is not a special kind of APBT, as some may claim. It is actually a line of dogs founded by Dave Wilson (among others). I use the term "line" because it comes from several different dogs where a bloodline is from one or two dogs in particular. Many today claim to have a RE dog, however this usually isn't the case. Due to Wilson's success, many have named their dogs Razors Edge _____ or RE's ______ to sell more dogs. Most of the dogs known as RE dogs today are not purebred APBTs but "American Bullys." The bully dogs are a cross between APBTs and ASTs, through selective breeding, to take the drive and tenacity out of the real APBT in addition to making the dog shorter and far more massive (especially in head size). This has taken away a lot of the working ability of the real APBT, but has provided a calmer yet larger dog.

In terms of red nose, this is just a color. There are three nose colors today associated with APBTs: black, red, blue. Blue is really just a lightened version of black due to selective breeding. In terms of breed type there is no physical difference other than color when it comes to noses. The reds originally stemmed from Old Family Red Nose (OFRN) strains which originated in Ireland.

Most true RE dogs are NOT red noses, but black or blue. This being said, very few people actually have the true RE blood in their dogs at all anymore.

The simple answer is that a RE red nose is just another phenotype of a "Pit Bull" but certainly not a true APBT.

*An earlier post said that ASTs were the real breed. This is false, the AST got it's name because the AKC didn't want to recognize the APBT because of it's fighting history. So (partially due to the fact the APBTs have a history partly from Staffordshire, England) they called the APBT of the late 1800s the AST and it has been bred separately in the most part ever since.

Hope this helps.

A red nose pit is just that, a pitbull with a red nose. The nose of any normal dog will most of the time, be black. A red nose pit, however, will have a "red" nose. Not like Rudolph red, or cherry red, but more of a tan color, and normally have a bit of red on his/her lip skin and under his/her chin.
