Indeed he was. His first order of business in the land that he claimed to have discovered, was to set up a foothold for the crown. He did bring smallpox to the natives when he arrived killing hundreds of them. But the most brutal thing Chris Columbus ever did was after the fabled "Thanksgiving" After this now renowned holiday, the very next morning Columbus began enslaving the native race. They were thought of as ingenious, and savages. Not at all on the same level as the wonderful British at the time. Columbus often offered children as rape slaves to his crew members as well. Many girls around the age of 10 - 12 were often used in this practice, so it is fair to say that he was also a pedophile. All in all, Christopher Columbus is NOT the hero we all were taught he was in grade school. He was a very dark man, with his ambitions set on the domination of people he thought of as lower life forms. Why we celebrate a holiday in his honor is beyond me. He didn't even step foot on the land we now call America.

Not at all, if you ask me. Often times, when he went to a country, he would tie up the natives, and even turn them into slaves what a mean person so mean what a shame.

Columbus beat, raped, killed, and took natives. When Columbus first reached America there were 10 million natives living on the land, when he left only 1 million.

Christopher Columbus: Hero or Villain?

How should history judge Christopher Columbus-as a hero or a villain? It is a question which is still debated about today. He was famed for discovering the Americas, although he never actually set foot on the continents themselves. In the 1970s, many people began to realize that Columbus treated the Taino people as slaves. People started to realize he may not have been the hero that they all thought he was.

The following is a list of events leading up to the events that some would call villainous. In 1492, Columbus set out from Spain on a voyage to find a new route to Asia, sponsored by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. On October 12, he reached the present-day Bahamas, after sailing for only 36 days. He thought that he had found Asia, so he called the people "Indians". They were really the Taino people, the natives to the island.

Columbus described these people as "gentle" and having "generosity of heart." He was so cruel that he added, "They should be good and intelligent servants, for I see that they say very quickly everything that is said to them; and I believe that they would become Christians very easily, for it seemed to me that they had no religion. Our Lord pleasing, I will take six of them from here to Your Highnesses in order that they may learn to speak." In other words, since they were gentle and good, he would take them against there will as slaves to a strange place to serve the king and queen of Spain. Sounds like a rather nice gentleman.

On Columbus' second voyage to the Caribbean, he brought 17 ships and 1300 Spanish military men, farmers, craftsmen, and clergy in November 1493. Their goal was the 3G's-God(to convert the Taino people to Christianity), Gold (to find gold in "Asia"), and Glory (conquer the island and be in control, having power). Many of the men came because Columbus told them that there was "incredible amounts" of gold and spices, when in reality very little was ever found. But many died searching for Columbus' gold.

Most accounts of people who were around Columbus, he was a rigid, paranoid man who believed that reaching Asia was his destiny. He even made his crew swear they had landed in China when he reached the shores. He later forced each native over 14 to get him a certain quota of gold per day. Anyone who didn't reach that quota had their hands chopped off, and those who resisted were killed. Many natives who fled the area were hunted down or starved. Forced marriages were not uncommon, as the Spanish did not bring any women with them to the island. But the worst thing that the Spaniards brought to the Taino people were diseases, which decreased their population from 400,000 to a few hundred by the 1500s.

After Columbus explored many islands, not find very much gold, he returned to Spain, bringing 500 KIDNAPPED natives with him to Spain!! Half of them died on the journey. Eventually, he was arrested in Spain, but was let out.

Overall, I believe that Columbus, although having some heroic traits, was a villain. One last thing that I would like to say about Columbus was that he offered a reward to the first person who saw land on his first voyage. The first man to spot it was Rodrigo de Triana, aboard La Pinta, one of Columbus' ships. But later Columbus claimed that he really saw the land first and gave himself the reward of 10,000 maravedís ( a form of Spanish currency). So let me go over the praiseworthy traits of Christopher Columbus. He discovered land that people already lived on, enslaved natives, brought diseases to the natives, cut off people's hands, and thought he reached India. Columbus, in my opinion, was a villain.

Christopher Columbus was neither a hero or a villain, he was a man of his time, he was a man on a mission. It is a mistake to judge in hindsight based on the outcome of his mission or the standards of behavior of his time.

His importance in history is pivotal in that his discovery of the 'new world' put the land he encountered permanently on the map and the consciousness of the European people, whereas previous encounters with the continents and their people by Europeans did not. The many historical situations and events that followed his discovery, both good and bad, cannot be attributed to Columbus, but to human behavior in general.

Answer

He was a Hero. Unless you were a native of the new world whose family was wiped out by the diseases that the Spaniards brought to them.

And then, yes, he is a hero to Spain because he re-discovered America for the Spanish, which led to their conquests in the Americas. This was a mixed blessing for them because they eventually lost this far-flung empire. He is a hero to the US because his brave exploration of the perilous ocean led to the founding of the country, albeit by the English.

Answer

Answer

Is Christopher Columbus a hero OR villain?

He is a hero who became a villain because as the first European to discover America, he began the subjugation of the natives who lived there.

Answer

There is no real answer. It's all just a matter of debate. You could call him a hero, a villain, or both. In any event, he became historically very famous.

Answer

He's a Hero. I think you're all missing the point. If he did not discover America we would probably not be here for a very long time. He had bad crew members if you ask me. His crew members stole, enslaved the Taino, and committed violence. Christopher spread Christianity and gave treasures to Spain and he ended up inspiring the best country in the world.

Answer

Christopher Columbus is a villain because

  • he went to America to search for money, unlike the common belief that he came for the well being of others
  • He saw the Native Americans and went and told Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand that they could be used as slaves and easily be converted to Christianity
  • When he ruled part of the New World, Queen I and King F sent people to inspect his work. What they learned is that he treated people badly, was a huge jerk, and basically failed at being a leader. They had to replace him

Answer

He also brought diseases such as smallpox measles and mumps.

Others will say that he was a hero because he found America, but honestly, I think someone would have found it in that time period. Some people will say that he was raised to think that owning slaves was good, not bad. That he was born in a time period where people without slaves were thought of as poor. But I think that he still could have freed his slaves without other people telling him it was bad. He could have set a good example.

Answer

He was a heroic Navy Captain, Navigator and Explorer who failed to understand the human needs of the people he discovered in the Americas.

Answer

Totally villain. He enslaved many Native Americans despite the general instructions of his charter not to engage in actions that might incite hostility among the tribes.

I don't think so. The only thing I know him doing is finding America. But he was not the first one to, there was another man who found it before him. Christopher Columbus might of came across some pirates that they did not metion in any of the book. If he did come across some pirates, it would of been an easy win for Columbus.

Yes. Christopher Columbus was a villain. He raped and murdered several tribe members and cut off their hands when they didn't do what he told them to do.
