The Fulda Cathedral was built between 1704 and 1712 by the master-builder Johann Dientzenhofer in the style of Roman-Baroque. At the building site previously there had been an even larger basilica from the 9th century (Ratgar-Basilika), some foundation parts of which were integrated in the new building. The church was promoted to cathedral of diocese Fulda in 1752. The mortal remains of Boniface are buried in the crypt and therefore the cathedral remains one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Germany.
