"Heart of Darkness" has been widely criticized for its racist characterization of African people and its imperialistic undertones. However, it is also celebrated for its complex narrative structure and commentary on the human condition. The book's depiction of Africa and its people reflects the prejudices of its time and must be considered within that context.

People who understand this novella know this book is not meant to be racist. There are demeaning words used against ethnic groups by the main character, but the theme of the novella is that the Europeans are more savage than the natives in the motives they use to "civilize" them. Therefore, it is not racist.

Joseph Conrad is the author of a very controversial novella called "Heart of Darkness." He wrote about the Congo and what happened there when it was under the power of the European settlers, who were trying to gain control and civilize the people and take advantage of the Natural Resources that their land had to offer. Chinua Achebe argues that Joseph Conrad is racist. Achebe takes a closer look at Joseph's novella from different points of view. He wrote an essay in which he depicts the reasons why "Heart of Darkness" is discriminatory and ignorant. I agree with Chinua Achebe. The novella "Heart of Darkness" was written at a time when people had very little knowledge about the African culture, and they often made false assumptions. Conrad's writing failed to treat others without discrimination and did not respect others' dignity and rights. Discrimination is one of the great tragedies of modern life.

Nigerian novelist, Chinua Achebe, is of the opinion that the book is racist. Zimbabwean Professor Dr. Rino Zhuwarara agrees. So where you grow up influences the opinion of the novel.

Why is the Heart of Darkness divided into three sections?

It has to do with "toward the heart of darkness", "in the heart of darkness," and "out of the heart of darkness." It seems nicely organized to me, but where these breaks specifically happen- I'm not sure if its where the book breaks or just within the story. ...If that makes sense. :)

How was Heart of Darkness postcolonial?

"Heart of Darkness" is considered postcolonial because it critiques the effects of European colonialism on African societies. The novella highlights themes of power, exploitation, and the psychological impact of imperialism on both colonizers and colonized peoples. Through its portrayal of the brutality and darkness inherent in colonialism, the story challenges dominant colonial narratives and exposes the dehumanizing nature of imperialism.
