Absolutely, he was one of the greatest prophets of all time. One of the reasons is that he brought back much of the truth that had been lost during the apostasy.

Another opinion:

Joseph Smith made several well-known false prophecies. See the site below.

ANSWER:Yes Joseph Smith is a prophet, but he never made false prophesies. A prophet of God will not be allowed (BY GOD HIMSELF) to lead the members of His church in the wrong direction.

"I say to Israel, the Lord will never permit me or any other man who stands as president of the Church to lead you astray. It is not in the program. It is not in the mind of God. If I were to attempt that the Lord would remove me out of my place, and so he will any other man who attempts to lead the children of men astray from the oracles of God and from their duty. God bless you."

(Discourses of Wilford Woodruff, pp. 212-13: see also Official Declaration 1).

Well according to awesome people, he was a prophet. I proclaim he is a prophet and he made a true prophesy.

This is a matter of opinion. Followers of Joseph Smith ask that you learn his story and decide for yourself through prayer. Whether or not he was what he said he was will always be a matter of debate.

This is a matter of opinion. Joseph Smith faced several criminal charges, some of which cast doubt on his honesty. At the age of 20, he was charged with the misdemeanor of being a "disorderly person". As Wikipedia describes the case, Smith had a certain stone which he had occasionally looked at to determine where hidden treasures were; that he professed to find gold mines underground, and that at Palmyra he pretended to tell by looking at this stone where coined money was buried in Pennsylvania, and while at Palmyra had frequently ascertained in that way where lost property was of various kinds. He was found guilty, although it appears from records that he was only required to pay costs.

The question is probably related much more as to whether Smith lied in saying that he received the Book of Mormon from an angel, on gold plates. At a time when the Egyptian hieroglyphics appeared likely to remain indecipherable for all time, he stated that the plates were written in 'Reformed Egyptian'. Some characters of this 'Reformed Egyptian' language have supposedly been preserved in the 'Anthon Transcript', of which "Recent scholarship, including handwriting analysis, suggests the "Caractors" document was written by David Whitmer's brother John Whitmer in or after 1829". The characters on the document have been described as meaningless doodles, and the respected Smithsonian Institution says (Statement Regarding the Book of Mormon, 1996), "No inscriptions using Old World forms of writing have been shown to have occurred in any part of the Americas before 1492 except for a few Norse rune stones which have been found in Greenland."
