Yes, Michael Collins was considered a hero. In nearly every house in Ireland there was a portrait of MICHAEL COLLINS "THE MAN WHO WON THE WAR" hanging up in a prominent place in the house. In fact, I have one hanging over my back door.

AnswerTo most people really, most people don't like to delve into it too much cause he was responsible for lots of death too. It's kinda like: "he was a hero", "what about the dead people", "shut up! that's what!" AnswerI think the Irish considered him as a hero because he won them what they always wanted-independence. But he killed many people on his way and he used too much violence causing the British to do likewise. Therefore, some people don't think he was a hero.

Others say it was always the British army that used too much violence and that under the command of Collins civilians were never attacked, POWs were never torturted and the fighting was confined to soldier vs soldier. They argue that the British army massacred civilians at the Gaelic football match in Dublin on November 21, 1920 killing 12 people in the crowd and one player as a revenge for British soldier deaths. They also say the British regularly tortured POWs brutally and supposedly had an open and active policy of shooting civilians in the countryside who had their hands in their pockets "in case they were IRA."

AnswerYes he was a hero, but unfortunatly his objective was cut short by that old British tactic of "DIVIDE AND CONQUER". AnswerMichael Collins is and was considered a hero, I have no idea where opinions of excessive force come from as I haven't ever heard of them before. His funeral in Cork along with that of Terrence McSwiney are still remembered today. I live in Cork and am only 26 but have heard countless stories etc. about him. He was respected enough by both sides that an English fleet was allowed sail into Cork Harbour to salute him AnswerHaving read the previous answers, I have to diasgree with whoever said he caused too much death, and therefore the British replied with the same, this man freed much of Ireland and in my opinion was stabbed in the back by de Valera, who it seems had the protection of the US Behind the Scenes. Let's not forget the country known as Great Britain has marched, murdered, and pillaged its way across the globe the same as any world power of yesterday in times gone by, but maybe the English should remember who invented concentration camps, they should remember who supplied the partisans of World War 2 with arms and orders to kill and maim as much as possible, and who is still one of the biggest arms exporters to countries such as Iraq in the not too distant past. But all that aside, violence will only breed violence and let's hope peace will win the day, and hatred fade away. AnswerYes, not only was he considered a hero. He was a hero. As an American and more importantly a 3rd generation Irish-American, I firmly believe that to take up arms against a foreign military to liberate your people and country is heroic and just. America took up arms against the same foreign aggressor. The British empire. Who took up arms against the civilan populations in nearly every soverign country in the world, with the intent to steal whatever resources, including those reaped from forced labor that could be generated from the victims who were not brutally murdered by the crown? They did not take up arms to liberate people. They did it to enslave and exploit people. So they could then steal everything the people and their country had. That is extremely violent and pure evil. Which far dwarfs the violence used by Collins in a noble and just cause:Liberation. AnswerYes, Michael Collins was most certainly a hero. Only for him Ireland may not have what we have today. Michael Collins olny caused bloodshed because this was the only thing the British knew. The Black and Tans found killing the innocent Irish fun. Michael Collins killed for his great love for our land. AnswerMichael Collins was a great hero that had the courage to stand up to any opposition, and as stubborn as they come too. He did his very best to get the south and we should all admire him for his bravery. Amen Deve lera did really stab him in the back after Micheal got the treaty and that is how he made himself famous.

Attitudes towards Irish Independence leader, Michael Collins varied. For people in the southern part of Ireland, believed he betrayed the Republican movement by signing a treaty with the British. Feelings about Michael split between two factions of the IRA. He was ambushed and murdered by unknown parties in August, 1922.

That depends on your perspective on Irish history. For many he was a freedom fighter and for others he was a terrorist. For some he sold out by negotiating the treaty, while for others they though it was an achievement to have got so much. Generally in Ireland he is regarded as a hero. There are many different key events in his life that different people look on in different ways. So it is not a simple and definitive answer.
