Was homer illiterate?

Simpsons creator, Matt Groening, named Homer Simpson after his father, Homer Groening.

He partly was named after the famous blind Greek poet Homer, who wrote The Odyssey. It tickled creator Matt Groenig's fancy to name his dunce everyman after a famously wise epic poet.
