Was it common to be hiding in the holocaust?

[Edit]
Living in hiding was very difficult. One needed trustworthy friends to bring food and so forth, and the penalties for sheltering Jews were drastic. One also needed somewhere to hide.

In general, living in hiding was not possible in small towns. One chances were usually better in a big city. However, it was not common.
