The professional [[National Lacrosse League]] 2008 season was temporarily canceled due to contract disputes between the league and the players union (the Professional Lacrosse Players Association). Fortunately, an agreement was reached in time to salvage the season, although there was considerable fallout from the dispute.
The Arizona team (Arizona Sting) suspended operations for the year, and the players were temporarily released to other teams in a special dispersal draft. Should the team resume operations for the 2009 season, the players will return.
A second consequence was the postponement of the inaugural season of the new Massachusetts franchise, the Boston Blazers. The team is scheduled to begin competition in the 2009 season, currently.
Finally, many of the other teams have had scheduling difficulties for 2008, since their home arenas released their initial dates to other events. This has led to some odd times for games, and reputedly lower attendance for some teams, particularly early in the 2008 season since many fans were under the impression that the season had been canceled.
