They were made from synthetic quartz and were used for strict control of electronic oscillator frequency. I worked there from 1980 to 1987 in the development lab Ivor G6ATJ
The area is named after the Crystal Palace, a large buiding, mostly of glass, built for the Great Exhibition of 1851. It was later burnt down in an accidental fire.
