"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the Great and Dreadful Day of the Lord: and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." (Malachi 4:5-6)

Contrary to popular belief and teaching... Elijah is DEAD. So, he won't be coming back to life and doing anything ["...the dead know not any thing..." - Eccle.9:5] until Jesus sends His angels to "gather His elect" at the time of His return: Elijah, being among the "dead in Christ" to be resurrected, first [see I Thess.4:16].

Malachi's prophecy is talking about a "type" of Elijah... one of whom appeared just before Jesus was revealed in His days in the flesh -- one "John the Baptist"... as the angel informed John's father, Zacharias:

"...he shall be great in the sight of the Lord... and he shall be FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT [ghost is an unfortunate translation in the KJV]... and many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before Him IN THE SPIRIT AND POWER OF ELIAS [Elijah], to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." (Luke 1:15-17)

This is a direct quote of Malachi's prophecy, showing that John was not "Elijah"... but God's choice to fulfill it in the POWER of Elijah -- which was and is the HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD!

Or... as the NIV quotes Jesus on the matter: "...I tell you the Truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.

"From the days of John the Baptist until now, the Kingdom of Heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to accept it, HE IS THE ELIJAH WHO WAS TO COME. He who has ears, let him hear." (Matt.11:11-15 NIV)

There is another "Elijah" to come, again, before Jesus returns... someone, again, in the Power and Spirit of Elijah. For Malachi's prophecy states that this Elijah will come before the "Day of the Lord"... the "Day of Lord, Jesus Christ's, gathering of His elect."

The "Day of the Lord" is the "seventh seal" of Revelation... which comes AFTER the sixth seal of the "darkening of the earth" -- the final sign marking Jesus' imminent return that the whole world will not be able to miss [see Rev.6:12-17 & Matt.24:29].

This hasn't happened, yet.

"The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, BEFORE the Great and the Terrible Day of the Lordcome." (Joel 2:31)

So, no... Elijah, himself, won't come... but someone after the manner of John the Baptist... in the SPIRIT and POWERof Elijah. For Elijah's Spirit and Power was... and is to this day the Spirit and Power of God Almighty.

At that moment... in "the twinkling of an eye"... when Jesus returns, Elijah and all the "dead in Christ" will live again by His Power and Glory... and those of His still alive on earth will join them in the clouds [Matt.24:30-31].

Why did Elisha want a double portion of Elijah's spirit?

In 2 Kings 2:9 Elisha asked Elijah "Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit". This was immediately before Elijah was to be taken up to Heaven and Elisha is being asked to take over as the Prophet of the Lord for the whole of Israel. This was no small job description and you can imagine that Elisha didn't feel worthy nor capable of filling Elijah's shoes. That was why Elisha was asking for a double portion.

Why would the Jewish people of Jesus' day expect Elijah's return to the land of Israel?

There is nothing outside the Christian gospels to say that the first century Jews really did expect the return of Elijah. However, the people of the day were very superstitious and the Bible says that Elijah was taken up into heaven without dying. for these reasons it is possible that they believed in the possibility of a return of Elijah.Another answer:The Jews' expectations of Elijah's return arose from the prophecy of Malachi 4:5, 6 - "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse."Luke's gospel announces the fulfillment of the prophecy in John the Baptist, the prophet who came "in the spirit and power of Elijah" (Luke 1:17).[Quotes from NKJV]
