The person before me is only two thirds right they forgot the ESPer who is ummm i forget his name...... sorry. But the story is mainly about a lonely girl named Haruhi that had a special event ( sorry I'I'm so vague i don't wanna ruin the story for you =3) that caused a block in the time continuum. That's what brings the Time Traveler. Due to the block in the time continuum being blocked for a certain period of time the Alien's Organisation's research is interrupted. That's what brings the Alien. When the Time Continuum was blocked a powerful force erupted. The EPSer Organisation felt it and sent one to check out what happens. That's What brings the ESPer. Then there's Kyon. He's Haruhi's romantic interest. He has to do something at the end of the regular episodes that ends Haruhi's Melancholy forever. Those are the people who make up the SOS brigade. While Haruhi can be used as a unisex name in Japan, it is more commonly used for females.
That depends entirely on what characters are used to write it. For example, written 春姫 (as in Kamisaka Haruhi from the game and anime Happiness!) it means 'spring' and 'princess', but written 晴日 (as in singer Aiso Haruhi) it means 'clear weather' and 'day' or 'sun'. It's also commonly written in hiragana (as はるひ) or katakana (as ハルヒ), which is phonetic spelling; the characters have no meaning.Since I suspect it might be why you're asking, both Suzumiya Haruhi's and Fujioka Haruhi's (Ouran High School Host Club) given names are written in katakana.
