Were knights as good as they were portrayed? In: European History |
[Edit] |
Answer
Of course not. That all came about when "Camelot" was popular. Knights considered it their duty to destroy all non-Christians who refused to convert. Unfortunately, it was a very "dark" time in human history. It was, in part, a response to the Islamic crusades that reached as far as Southern Spain. Today's Basque population are the descendants of the Islamic invaders.
Knights supported the rights of the king and the church, and as such were often little more than the king's "enforcers" and often murdered anyone who didn't have the resources to pay appropriate tribute to the crown or the church.
Answer
Since the 19th century nedieval knights have been highly glamourized and portrayed as all in shining armour, rescuing 'damsels in distress' and all the other things they were supposed to do. Occasionally, there's one who's sinister, just to give us a little frisson.
(As for the origins of the Basques and especially their language, it is a mystery).
