from what i was able to find the answer is no, the us navy started it's radiation health program with four officers in 1947. they used a filmstrip type for navy personnel verturing near bikini atoll or hiroshima or any of the other radioactive places in the pacific. maybe your granddad was assigned flight duty near one of these places?
