There is no unit in the Army that calls itself the Red Shirts. You might be thinking of the term "red shirt" which refers to a disposable extra character who is likely to get killed fighting the main hero/villain in a story. This term comes from the red shirts worn by security personnel in the original Star Trek series, who would often form part of the away teams with one or more of the main characters and end up getting killed in order to demonstrate the danger that the main characters were in.
