Not always. For instance, when the Beatles performed in Hamburg in 1960, their lineup teamed John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison with bass player Stuart Sutcliffe and drummer Pete Best. The familiar Beatles lineup materialized over time when Sutcliffe decided to remain in Germany and Ringo Starr replaced Best on drums. Also, at one time, the lineup included just John, Paul, and George.
