There are no native snakes in Ireland - it's one of the few places on earth that is almost free from reptiles, having only about one species of lizard, which can sometimes be seen in the very south of Ireland. It is the common lizard, known as Lacerta Vivipara, and is very small. A lot of people in Ireland would have never seen one or even know it exists. There is however no evidence of there ever being snakes in Ireland. The legend of St. Patrick banishing snakes from Ireland is thought to be a reference of his bringing of Christianity taking the place of widespread paganism that existed then.
