This question pre-supposes that Atlantis actually existed. That has yet to be proven.
The island of Atlantis was first mentioned by Plato in 360 B.C., telling stories of an island that existed about 9600 B.C. According to the story, the island sank into the ocean on a single night, after a failed attempt to invade Athens. There have been several stories about the location, but the name Atlantis indicates that it was somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean.
