Western ghats are not mountains but still they are named as ghats?

Answer:
A ghat is a series of steps leading down to a river. It is an Indian term. The Western Ghat mountains are actually the edge of the continental plate in the northern part of India. They are probably called Ghat because they look rather like a set of steps. The fact that they are not true mountains does not mean that they are not huge piles of rock, but that they were not formed out of the earth's crust like other mountains.
