You probably have a case of acute gingivitis. Your mouth has been sore, perhaps difficult to open. You haven't been chewing very much; you've been eating lots of soups and other soft foods. And, perhaps most important, you haven't been brushing your teeth as well as you ought to. All these factors can contribute to a painful, swollen infection of the gums.
You may notice that your gums will bleed when you brush now. Be assured they are not bleeding because you are brushing. The gums are bleeding because they are infected. Keep up the brushing at least once or twice each day. Brush the gums as well. Flossing is important, too. If you keep this up daily, you should notice that your gums do not bleed after about two weeks. If they continue to bleed or the swelling remains, see your dentist or dental hygienist. They can tell you more precisely what is going on.
