Richard I, known as "Richard the Lionheart", was King of England in 1189 until his death in 1199 AD. He took part in the Third Crusade, acting as its military commander after Phillip Augustus , King of France, withdrew from the crusade in 1191 citing poor health and succession concerns back home.
