The Mohawk Tribe Indians only wore their hair in a "Mohawk" when they went to war, the hair cut was named after them. Other wise they just let it grow long like all the other tribes. Women also wore their hair long except when they were greiving, in that case they cut it really short.

Mohawk men shaved their heads with the exception of a scalp lock or crest down the center of their head. The style was known as a "roach" or "Mohawk". They often splayed the hairstyle with feathers, dyed porcupine quills and deer or badger hair. The hair cut may have served as a style to designate warrior status or as a means of taunting the enemy, reducing the amount of hair available to grab in hand-to-hand combat or as a form of ceremonial symbolism.
