Native Americans STILL live in New York State, so the question should be phrased in the present tense, not the past. The Onondaga, Mohawk, Seneca, Oneida, Cayuga, and Tuscarora reside in a wide swath of territory, from the far northeast of the state to near Buffalo, in the west. They were formerly know as the Iroquois Confederacy, a name bestowed on them by the French, but call themselves Haudenosaunee ("they are building a long house").

These nations have occupied the territory of upstate NY and parts of what is now Canada since at least the 1100s. The Haudenosaunee nations' political union and democratic government has been credited as one of the influences on the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution. This is debated by scholars, but it is widely acknowledged that Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson had contact with the nations and were influenced by their form of government.
