A defender stays back by the goal cage. But if you basicley look at a map of the field, everyone is a defender. The offense is the first line of defenders. If the ball gets past them, then its the midfielders. If the ball then gets past defense, then you better have a good goalie. The defender tries to block the ball from getting into, or anywhere near the goal.
