Most of the jobs in the 1800's were the same as now, just with fewer people doing some and more doing others. A few new ones added to the mix since then. In the 1800s people worked in factories and made things, they were cooks and gardeners, doctors, lawyers, priests and pastors, carpenters, plumbers, ditch diggers, clerks, sailors, soldiers, scientists, barrel makers, ship builders, telegraph and telephone operators and electricians and many others. Most people, however, were farmers or ranchers.

Men laid down street-car tracks and worked as plumbers, boilermakers, and steamfitters. Womwn were bakers, janitors, saloon keepers, tailors, hotel keepers, and domestic workers, and peddlers.
In the US, most people were farmers, so the easiest job for an immigrant to get would be farm work. Thread had to be spun and cloth had to be woven on hand looms, so spinners and weavers were needed. Clothes had to be made by hand, seamstresses and tailors were in demand. Woodcutters were needed, as were carpenters and blacksmiths.
Craftsmen of all types were needed.
The Chinese had many jobs including assisting the gold hunters and owning stores. although the Chinese didn't have good jobs they still had them and they weren't giving them anytime soon because many Chinese couldn't get into that colony. THANKS
