The kidneys are the principle organ for maintaining salt and water balance. One of the functions of the kidneys is to control the water and salt balance in the body. That is why it is referred to as the main organ of homeostasis.

Your kidneys function to remove excess water, or retain water when you need it. They also work hard to regulate the amounts of electrolytes in your body (such as sodium, potassium, etc.) The kidneys do this directly by circulating your blood through the various structures within them.
