Lou Gehrig, a first baseman with the New York Yankees between 1923-1939, was nicknamed the Iron Horse. He played in 2,130 consecutive games between June 1, 1925 and April 30, 1939. This consecutive games played streak was a record many thought would never be broken. However, on September 6, 1995, shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. surpassed the record and went on to play another 501 consecutive games to set the bar at 2,632.
