Kiev is technically the birthplace of Russia, this was where the Kievan Rus was (a state of East Slavic peoples) which was the predecessor of Muscovy which would become the Russian Empire or 3rd Rome.
Ukraine is in the east of Europe. Its capital city is Kiev.
