Smørgåsbord origins from Sweden and goes back to 17th Century. "Smør" means "butter"; "gås" means "goos"; "bord" means "table." All together it means a buffet-style table with multiple hot and cold dishes of various foods. Was introduced to Americans at the New York World Fair in 1939. It's a traditional way of serving food throughout whole Scandinavia. In Danish they use the term "Det store kolde bord" [the great cold table], in Norway "koldtbord" The "smørgåsbord" is served throughout the whole year but 2 major events with rich traditions is arround Christmas and Easter.
