Both a apostle and a disciple are the same thing.

A disciple is somebody who attaches themselves to a teacher's doctrines, which the Twelve were whilst Jesus was on Earth. However, when the Holy Spirit came upon them in Jerusalem, they had been commanded to go out, preaching the Gospel to all nations. The term APOSTLE means one who is sent out.

Thus the DISCIPLES became APOSTLES when they started their own ministries.
