The South American country of Colombia honors the memory of Christopher Columbus [August 25-October 31, 1451 - May 20, 1506]. For Columbus was the first European known to discover the New World, and by his discovery start the first permanent settling of the Anericas.

Instead, it's Rodrigo de Bastidas [1460-July 28, 1527] who mapped the northern coast of South America, and founded the Colombian city of Santa Marta.
