  1. Seattle, Oregon has the most annual rainfall.
  2. Amendment to #1... First of all, Seattle is in Washington, not Oregon. Second it is a common misconception that the states in the Pacific Northwest have the highest annual rainfall rates. While it may rain more days out of the year, the rainfall is not very heavy. The ten rainiest cities (by precipitation in inches averaged over the past 30 years) were all in the Southeastern part of the country - mostly in Louisiana, Florida, and Alabama. These cities ranged from 58 to 67". The #1 rainiest being Mobile, AL. Major cities in Oregon and Washington state average about 36 to 40" per year.
  3. This is, of course, only taking into account the continental US. Hawaii tends to see an even higher annual rainfall - with Hilo, on the Big Island, recording upwards of 200 inches per year in some places and averaging 125"+ from 1949 to 2007. Parts of Alaska also see 110"+ per year.
  4. For a frame of reference, US cities such as New York, NY, Atlanta, GA, Boston, MA and Washington, DC have higher annual rainfall rates than both Portland, OR and Seattle, WA (which are often thought of as the rainiest cities).
  5. By the way, Las Vegas is the driest city in the US (averaging 4" per year from 1960 to 1990 and has become even drier in recent years).
