Gettysburg eliminated Lee's ability to conduct offensive operations outside Virginia and swung the initiative to the Union in the Eastern Theater of Operations. In the West, Grant's capture of Vicksburg closed the Mississippi to Confederate traffic, choking them off from reinforcements and supplies from Texas and Arkansas. Lookout Mountain opened the way to the heart of the Southern interior, allowing Sherman to take Atlanta and make his March to the Sea, which destroyed the South's ability to supply its troops, essentially starving Lee's army into submission and preventing any reinforcements from getting to him. It was a variation of Scott's original Anaconda Plan.
