It depends on how old the kittens are. But, whatever you do, DO NOT BATHE YOUR PUSSYS! They can lose their body heat very easily and die. The only way to get rid of fleas on newborn kittens is to give the mother something that kills fleas, since it is highly probable that they got them fom Mama cat, and hope that the babies get enough through her milk.

You can treat very young (less than 8 wks old) kittens for fleas but not with commercial flea and tick treatments. Using flea and ticks treatments on kittens that young can kill them. The best way is to give them a bath with warm water and use either mild dish detergent or baby shampoo. This won't completely rid them of fleas or their eggs, but it does serve to remove some of the fleas. This will, at least, give the kitten some measure of improved comfort.

Kittens should not have fleas when newborns, however I have 6 one month old kittens and all have fleas except the mom. They were all born inside. Some say you should give them a bath in dawn dish soap or lemon soap, but this is incredibly dangerous to let very young kittens to come into contact with such harsh chemicals. If you must bathe them, just use warm water as kittens will go into hypothermia if they get too cold. If they are only a few weeks old or under don't give them a bath they might freeze before you can do anything as they cannot regulate their own body temperature. DO NOT DRY THEM WITH A HAIR DRYER!

Alternatively, combing them with a flea comb will help keep the fleas at bay for the short term. Tiny kittens can easily become anaemic from blood loss if the fleas are left on them. Most flea treatments recommend that kittens have to be 12 weeks old before using treatment because of the strong chemicals. Be sure to treat the house and nesting box by washing and changing towels every day.

Ask a vet and they'll give you a treatment for it. I don't think it costs all that much either. If you just don't feel like going to a vet, go to a supermarket or something and get a flea collar. I'd recommend getting the treatment from the vet because it works best.

If you want fleas out of your house, get your house "flea-bombed" if you want them out of the house quickly.

It is advised to ask your vet about flea treatments that are safe for nursing cats and kittens. Normal flea treatments are not a good idea because kittens are so much more sensitive to chemicals and pesticides. Fleas are not good, but if there are only one or two, it is unlikely to cause problems for the babies. However, it is not advised to leave them go untreated. Fleas can easily kill small kittens. The easiest method is to comb the mother and kittens at least once a day. Another possibility is to use the Frontline spray, which unlike other Frontline products is safe to use on newborn kittens.

You might also give the mother cat a bath with a flea shampoo and then make sure to completely rinse her off with fresh water. Be sure it is safe to use on nursing mothers.

Be sure to treat the house, also. Any bedding and towels used (especially where the kittens are) need to be washed in hot water every day. Carpets and other soft fabrics also need to be vacuumed and washed frequently. Be sure to throw the vacuum bag out after each use, as fleas can thrive in such an environment. One product that is said to be effective in the UK is called Skoosh(information below in Related Links). It immobilisers adult fleas and larvae, rendering them helpless. Due to it being being free of pesticides, it is safe to use around nursing cats and newborn kittens. Of course, before using any product, ask your vet about them first.

Give your very young kitten a bath in the sink with warm water. Make sure there head is above water. Dampen the kitten with water and add dawn and use something soft to lather and then rinse and towel dry. I am doing this to my very young kittens once a day. It works and then gently comb out remaining fleas with a flea comb for cats.

Why are kittens bron with fleas?

They are not; fleas cannot survive inside the uterus of a cat. However, because the kittens are so close to the mother cat, actually being physically in contact with her, once the mother cat has dried them off her fleas, if any, will immediately start attacking her kittens.
