There are many slightly different vaccination protocols out there, based on veterinarian experience (some have had better success with slight variations), geographic location and maternal history of vaccination.

The general standard for a healthy puppy, weaned at 10-12 weeks of age from a fully vaccinated dam, is a combination vaccine (distemper and parvovirus plus a few other viruses) at 8, 12, and 16 weeks of age plus a one-year rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age.

I have worked as a Veterinarian Technician for over 32 years. You DO need to vaccinate your dog against distemper, parvo, rabies and other viruses and diseases. The vaccine is either a killed vaccine or a modified live vaccine and will not give the virus to the dog. That is a bunch of bah hooey. The vaccines are meant to stimulate your dog's own natural immune system to make antibodies against that particular virus or viruses, thus protecting your pet against those viruses if he or she should be exposed to them. Please take your dog into your Veterinarian and talk with him or her about vaccinations. You certainly do not wish to see your dog come down with Parvo, very dangerous and painful, bloody diarrhea and vomiting, can cause death or worse yet, distemper, death 90% of the time, very painful, seizuring, etc. For the lack of a simple vaccination, you could see your dog die an agonizing death so go to your Vet and get those vaccinations and he or she will tell you how often too. At least a series of 2 vaccinations given 2-3 weeks apart to start out with, depending on the age of the dog, then yearly boosters. Rabies vaccination should be given at 4 months of age. You should start your dog as a puppy at 8 weeks, 10 weeks, 13 week then 16 weeks for the DHLP/Parvo vaccines and Rabies at 16 weeks. Don't even listen to some bozo who tells you not to give your dog vaccines, they know NOT of what they talk about. They should come to work with me and see all the dogs dying from bloody diarrhea & vomiting or seizuring, painful deaths because the owner thought they should not be vaccinated for some stupid reason. Listen to your Veterinarian. Also do not forget about protecting your pet against Heartworm with a monthly pill. Heartworm is found in all parts of the US. Ask you Vet about this too. Mosquitoes are the carriers, they bite infected dogs and then go on to bite your dog thus passing on the baby heartworms to your dog. Use the once a month heartworm preventative year around to protect your dog against Heartworm. Ask for the cheaper generic versions.

Shots should not be given under 5weeks of age, but they'll be okay unless they were vaccinated at 3weeks or less. If they were, watch them closely; some puppies can have adverse affects. HOWEVER, my dog was 18wks old and had TERRIBLE affects after a vaccine, so just be careful.
