Depends what the child is doing in their life.
If they're just going to use it the same as a normal computer, get them a desktop as they're far cheaper.
If they're taking it to school/university to take notes, then a laptop is a must.
Look into the circumstances and what a laptop is for, does your child need to use it on the go? Do you travel a lot? Is it for school?
Otherwise, a desktop is best.
