You can try giving your baby cereal mixed with breastmilk or formula around four months. If they seem like they aren't receptive or keep spitting it out try again the next week. Around six months you can start your baby on fruits and vegetables. Remember to always consult your pediatrician first before changing your baby's diet.

My pediatrician said to start them on a little solid food, thin baby cereal, when they start looking around for something after the breast or the bottle, like they haven't had enough. This happened at around four months. After a little while I started making the cereal a bit thicker, and later I began mixing in a little strained fruit at the side of the dish so some bites were more fruit and others were more cereal. This way we gradually transitioned to strained food in the little jars.

All the changes were very gradual, and there was never any resistance. Of course, at four months it was nowhere near time to take them off formula yet. I nursed them until they were a year old, and from birth they got one bottle a day (dad fed them once, late at night, while mom slept). They had formula until they were two. Again, there was no problem with transitioning to the bottle because there'd always been that one bottle, so it was easy to reduce the one and increase the other--no rejection.

Even though many of the "experts" say to start babies on baby food at around six months old, I started mine on a little cereal mixed in with their formula when they were six weeks old. I started out with a very thin consistency, then gradually increased the amount of cereal within a couple of weeks.

After they had been on the cereal a few weeks, I then gave them baby food fruit, and a couple of weeks after that, I began them on baby food vegetables, then meats.

You just need to wait a while after starting them on a new food before introducing new foods into their diet in case they are allergic to a specific food so you will know which one they are allergic to, and also so you don't 'overload' their digestive system.

Everyone I know has always started their baby on cereals and other baby foods starting around six weeks old, too. And mine did great with baby food at that age; they had no problems or discomfort of any kind. Actually, they slept better/longer at night because they weren't getting hungry again so soon after their bottle.

Some start as early as four months, but six months is the most recommended age. Mother's milk is the best food for your baby. It contains all the elements that your baby needs to grow (vitamins, essential fatty acids, calcium, iron, protein). You can feed grain flour enriched with iron to your child as the first solid food for your child. You can also feed your child with infant cereals like cerelac from the fourth month of your child's birth after consulting with a paediatrician. A good way to help your child to accept new flavours and textures is to feed your baby with gluten free flour cereals. You must simply dissolve several teaspoons of flour cereals (one to two tablespoons in the beginning) into a deep bowl and add water. This will help your child get enriched with iron. Fruits and vegetables are essential nutrients for the balanced diet for your child. Provide cooked fruits and vegetables for your child. Make a puree of fruits like apples, bananas, apricot, peaches etc without adding sugar, and vegetables like zucchini, carrots, green beans without adding salt and feed your child.
