They were at sea. Mainly they were ferrying aircraft to a different base, I don't know which one. They also conducted assorted training exercises while they were out. It was just plain lucky that those aircraft were scheduled to be shipped at that time. If the carriers had been at Pearl we would have been in a world of hurt. Michael Montagne The 3 Aircraft Carriers that where suppossed to be in Pearl Harbour where all at sea carrying new planes to the American Bases on Midway and the west Coast of U.S. I sincerly thing that if the 3 aircraft carriers scheduled to stay in Pearl Harbor they would have been sunk or damaged during the whole war, but that dont mean the United States would have lost the War, there where many other cariers in good condition, and dozens being pruduced silently in the ports. The Saratoga was in port at San Diego, California, the Enterprise was 200 miles west of Pearl Harbor returning from Midway where it had delivered aircraft, and the Lexington was 460 miles east of Midway on its way there to deliver aircraft.

Two of the three Pacific Fleet US aircraft carriers the USS Enterprise (CV-6) and USS Lexington (CV-2) were at sea heading back to Pearl Harbor after delivering planes to Pacific bases that were supposed to be likely targets of Japanese aggression. The USS Enterprise delivered Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat carrier-based fighters to Wake Island and the USS Lexington delivered Vought SB2U-3 Vindicator carrier-based dive bombers to Midway Island. The third Pacific Fleet US aircraft carrier, the USS Saratoga (CV-3) was in San Diego preparing to deliver planes, cargo and airmen to Pearl Harbor.

yes there a couple of dozen. if you want more info watch the movie pearl harbor. The Aircraft Carriers were out of dock during the Japanese attack on 7 December 1941. I wouldn't recommend basing my knowledge of history on the movie "Pearl Harbor".

No aircraft carriers were at Pearl Harbor

Most people would want to know what aircraft carriers were at Pearl Harbor, and I know the answer: None of the American carriers were at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 during the Japanese attack Japan was supposed to do because there is no way Japan can conquer southeast Asia if her armies immediately attacked, so in order to win, Japan had to attack Pearl Harbor. Although the attack was executed flawlessly, there was one unsolvable mystery: Where were the American carriers? The Japanese A6M Zeroes, D3A Vals, B5N Kates, J2M Raidens, J4Y Judys, and Jills had to attack the carriers to make America's power in Asia and the Pacific even weaker, almost to a 5%. So since there were no carriers at the scene of the 12/7 attack, Admiral Isorku Yamamoto, father of this plan, the 12/7 attack, decided his planned attack was over, and ordered the Japanese carrier-based planes to land. He was also unable to call in the third wave of the attack on Pearl Harbor, in which the planes' objective was to attack and sink the enemy carriers. Since the Japanese planes and Yamamoto noticed the carriers were elsewhere, Japan herself, her armies, air force, and navy remained on alert. Why? This is because the American carriers were out there and Japanese armies can't let them interfere with there plans for expansion.

There were lots of ships sunk or seriously scrapped at Pearl Harbor, but the aircraft carriers were lucky, because, like I said, there were no American carriers at Pearl Harbor. I do not know if there were any American surprise air attacks on Japanese harbors and/or if any of their carriers were at the harbor. Well, because there were no American carriers at Pearl Harbor, none of them got sunk -- well, some did, like the Yorktown Class carrier U.S.S. Yorktown. She was twice torpedoed at Midway (I'm not saying the Yorktown was twice torpedoed because the Lusitania, a British quadruple funneled ship, was twice torpedoed). However, because of the American and Australian victory in the Battle of Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway, Japan was forced to retreat. Japan was trying to take over Islands in the Pacific to build airfields there and use them for air raids on Australia, but the defeat at the Battles of Coral Sea and Midway stopped them.

If you mean what carriers were sunk at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 in the Japanese attack, the answer is none. All three Pacific Fleet carriers were all at sea, delivering aircraft, or on exercises. The fact that none of the carriers were present during the attack (along with the failure to launch the third wave attack and destroy the oil storage and submarine facilities) is counted as the reason the attack was a strategic failure for Japan.

== == They were all at sea in the Pacific Ocean. One of them (I think the USS Enterprise) was ferrying planes to Wake Island, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

None. Those were the airmen's primary targets...so they settled for battleships instead.

They weren't supposed to be there on December 7, 1941. They were on errands delivering airplanes, etc. to far ranging garrisons.
