Well, diabetics can have almost anything, but they need to plan for it in order to control blood sugar. Generally, they watch the consumption of carbohydrates throughout the day. The drink mix would also be counted.

As a type I diabetic for well over 20 years now, I would say that obviously no alcholic beverage is good for a diabetic. However, if you choose to drink, the best I have found is Michelob Ultra. To myself, it tastes just as good as a regular beer minus the loads of carbs you would get otherwise. Depending on if you take insulin at all or pills, for myself I can drink two to three before I even have to take one or two units of insulin if that explains it. Stay away from the wine coolers and so on..annnnd yep the margaritas :(..sadly. They are all loaded with so many carbs that any drunk sick you get depending on how many drinks we are discussing here haha, will be doubled when your blood sugars are over 400 mg/dl. Not a fun experience in the end and certainly no fun if it ends up with a hospital visit (luckily never was that dumb). Definately not worth it. I like to have a beer every now and then so I stick with the Michelob Ultra. Have fun!

Diabetics (type 1) can now drink as much as they want, no matter how much sugar it has in it, they just have to inject accordingly.

Diabetes can drink or eat anything, but should keep up their calorie intake and carb count.

According to the American Diabetes Association -

Beyond all the health and safety concerns about alcohol, if you have diabetes and are on diabetes medications that lower blood glucose, you need to practice caution. The action of insulin and some diabetes pills, sulfonylureas and meglitinides (Prandin), is to lower blood glucose by making more insulin. So, you should not drink when your blood glucose is low or when your stomach is empty.

Alcohol can cause hypoglycemia shortly after drinking and for 8-12 hours after drinking. So, if you want to drink alcohol, check your blood glucose before you drink and eat either before or while you drink. You should also check your blood glucose before you go to bed to make sure it is at a safe level -- between 100 and 140 mg/dL. If your blood glucose is low, eat something to raise it.

The symptoms of too much alcohol and hypoglycemia can be similar -- sleepiness, dizziness, and disorientation. You do not want anyone to confuse hypoglycemia for drunkenness, because they might not give you the proper assistance and treatment. The best way to get the help you need if you are hypoglycemic is to always wear an I.D. that states "I have diabetes."

Another problem with alcohol can be that it may lessen your resolve to stay on track with healthy eating. Contemplate this situation. You sit at a restaurant and sip a glass of wine while you peruse the menu. As you slowly relax your tastebuds might be more easily tempted to overindulge.

A diabetic should drink juice that is low in sugar. Juices such as cranberry juice with no sugar added would be an option to drink. Moderation is key with all juices.
