A:

The Epic of Gilgamesh and the biblical story of Noah's Flood are remarkably similar, with similar stories of birds being released, and even ending with a sacrifice on an altar and the invention of viticulture.

Scientists say there never was a great world-wide flood as described in The Bible. Ian Wilson (Before the Flood) believes that these stories and a number of related Near Eastern legends were really folk memories of the inundation of what is now the Black Sea around 5600 BCE, after the last Ice Age.

A:The story of Noah's Flood, in the Book of Genesis, is essentially a creation story that helped the early Hebrews explain where we came from and why there is a rainbow in the sky. The Bible tells how God wanted to destroy mankind by flooding the earth, but spared Noah and his close family because they were righteous. God told Noah to construct a great boat, an 'ark', and take every kind of animal onto the ark.

The recent consensus of scholars has been that the story either developed from the parallel flood story in the Epic of Gilgamesh or that they had a common origin. Ian Wilson (Before the Flood) has presented compelling evidence that there was a great, localised flood when the Mediterranean Sea breached the Bosphorus and flooded the rich, low-lying land that is now the Black Sea. He believes that both stories, as well as several others of similar origin, are folk memories of the Black Sea event.

Certainly the story of Noah's Flood is remarkably similar to the Flood story of Umapishtim in the much older Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh. On that evidence, the Epic of Gilgamesh is the most likely source for the story of Noah's Flood.

The floodwater doesn't "represent" anything. Noah's Ark is not a fictional story we tell little kids. Noah really lived, he really built a boat, and there really was a flood.
