Laughter is a rich experience and expression in human beings. Thus there are several shades of smiling and laughing expressions. They involve elaborate neurological and physiological processes. Such laughter is not seen in animals. But one can not deny occurrence of primitive prototype of "laughter" in terms of experience and expression in animals. Owners of pets can vouch on this point, if they understand when their pet is happy and how it expresses the same.

According to Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar, "self awareness" is conscious concomitant of the physiological processes involving laughter or smiling reflex [response] and its grades, degrees or spectrum varies according to phylogenetic development, with no clear cut demarcation. The emotional ingredients [such as contempt, hatred, ridicule, sarcasm, love, amusement etc] are variable and involve different neurological and physiological processes.

Self awareness and ability to identify with another's predicament may be prerequisite to intellectual jokes with specific references and contexts, but not for laughing behaviour as such.

Studies into various apes have shown that there are a great number of similarities between human laughter and that of the other primates, with infant apes (for example) behaving in much the same way as human infants when tickled.

In fact, most mammals, from rats (chirps beyond the range of human hearing) to dogs (huffing and panting excitedly) can be shown to demonstrate laughter-like responses to certain stimuli, with laughter proving to be just as contagious between animals as it is between humans; when one dog laughs, another may be stimulated to do so.
yes, it is funny, but animals such as dogs, monkeys, and even rats laugh. and it is proven. anyone can laugh.
Hyenas are wild dog-like animals that sound like they laugh but they are actually barking. Other animals that sound as if they laugh is the: green Parrot I have one at my grandma's house and the only thing it does when some one arrives is laugh, and dogs too, but they only open their mouth and go ah! ah ah. But you can look at their tail wagging fast and know they are laughing, or at least very happy.

No animal can truly "laugh", meaning to create a noise to indicate merriment or mirth.

Many mammals have been observed to do vocalizations that resembles and functionally acts like laughter. Most animal "laughter" may not be readily recognizable as laugh though. For example, when tickled, rats emits ultrasonic chirps that requires a special equipment for human to hear; apes' and dogs also vocalize "laughter" when tickled or when playing that although may be easily mistaken as panting, is distinctly different under audio analysis. In a study playing the sound of dog "laughter" have been found to reduce stress and calm dogs in shelters.

Numerous species demonstrate vocalizations similar to human laughter. A significant proportion of these are mammals, including non-human primates, which suggests that the neurological functions involved in expressing cheer occurred early in the process of mammalian evolution.

Hyenas make a laughing sound.

Chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos and orangutans show laughter-like vocalizations in response to physical contact, such as Wrestling, play chasing, or tickling. This is documented in wild and captive chimpanzees. Chimpanzee laughter is not readily recognizable to humans as such, because it is generated by alternating inhalations and exhalations that sound more like breathing and panting. It sounds similar to screeching.

The differences between chimpanzee and human laughter may be the result of adaptations that have evolved to enable human speech. It is hard to tell, though, whether or not the chimpanzee is expressing joy. There are instances in which non-human primates have been reported to have expressed joy. One study analyzed and recorded sounds made by human babies and bonobos (also known as pygmy chimpanzees) when tickled. It found that although the bonobo's laugh was a higher frequency, the laugh followed the same spectrographic pattern of human babies to include as similar facial expressions. Humans and chimpanzees share similar ticklish areas of the body such as the armpits and belly. The enjoyment of tickling in chimpanzees does not diminish with age.

Research has noted the similarity in forms of laughter among humans and apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans) when tickled, suggesting that laughter derived from a common origin among primate species, and has subsequently evolved prior to the origin of humans.

However, researchers are careful not to label these vocalizations as "laughter" because we still do not fully understand the nature of these vocalizations.

* BIRDS: Some birds such as parrots can mimic human laughter, and the laughing kookaburra / Laughing jackass (Australia) is well-known.
