The saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) was eliminated from Bali some time ago...probably during the mid 20th Century (1950's or so) when there was heavy hunting in the region. In fact, this species has been eliminated from all of West Nusa Tenggara and virtually all of Java (excluding a very small population on the western tip in Ujung Kulon.) The reason for the Balinese extinction is extensive hide-hunting and the total destruction of coastal habitat to make way for resorts and farming.
