Mountain lions were known to be in the Catskills when the Dutch came over in the 1600's. The mountain lion is not supposed to be in that part of the USA anymore--but many people have sighted these animals. Go to www.easterncougar.net-- this is the Cougar Network--very interesting stuff!!

Black bears, red and Gray Foxes, and bobcats are some animals that are native to the Catskill Mountain region of New York State. Milk snakes, ring neck snakes, and ribbon snakes are also found there. Some native plants to the area include nasturtiums, chicory, and dandelions.

The Catskill Mountains in New York State are located west of the Hudson River and about 100 miles to the northwest of the huge metropolitan area of New York City. Catskills cover more than six counties and six thousand square miles in terms of area, with almost half of this land dedicated to the Catskills Park and Forest Preserve, home many different kinds of animals. Many birds of prey call the Catskill Mountains home, in addition to a multitude of common bird species such as cardinals, chickadees, warblers, sparrows, woodpeckers, swallows and thrushes. The golden eagle and the bald eagle are found in the Catskills along with the northern goshawk, the Cooper's hawk, the red-tailed hawk, the red-shouldered hawk and the sharp-shinned hawk. Also present are such raptors as the osprey, the barn owl, the great horned owl and the eastern screech owl. Game birds such as ducks, geese, wild turkeys, grouse and bobwhite also populate the Catskills.
