The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie was published in 1988 and created an uproar by offending faithful Muslims around the world who protested and burned the book, prompting Ayatollah Khomeini to condemn Rushdie to death for "insulting Islam, the prophet Muhammed and the Holy Koran". Rushdie insists "the book that is worth killing people and burning flags for is not the book that I wrote".
