subtleties are nuances. :) In verbal or written communication, someone might say one thing and mean another, or there might be several possible meanings. This is subtext, or subtleties of meaning... the less obvious (subtle) meanings behind the main meaning. In a person, it might mean all of the different aspects of the person that you don't usually know until you get to know the person really well. There are obvious character traits, and then less obvious (subtle) ones that you have to search for a little.
In general, it is all of the less-obvious things about something.
