The traditional definitions are kinetic energy (due to motion) and potential energy (due to the relative location within a gravity field).

There is really only one type and it is the sum of the gravitational potential energy and the kinetic energy. Mechanical energy = (Mass)((Gravitational acceleration)(Height)+(1/2)(Velocity)²)

Types of mechanical energy are kinetic energy, gravitational potential energy and elastic potential energy.

  • Kinetic energy is energy that comes from the motion of a mass and is defined as K=1/2mv2 or kinetic energy is equal to half of the mass times the speed of the mass squared
  • Gravitational potential energy is energy that comes from a mass's position above an attracting object. The most common form of this is potential energy due to a mass's position above the surface of the earth. In this case, Ug=mgh which means that the gravitational potential energy is equal to the mass multiplied by the acceleration due to gravity at that point (assumed to be 9.80m/s2 at the surface of the earth) and by the height above the surface of the attracting body, in this case the Earth
  • Elastic potential energy is the energy that comes from deforming an object by stretching or compressing it. An easy example of this is loading a dart gun where you compress a spring when inserting the dart and when the dart is released, it gains speed as the spring returns to its original length. The equation for this is Ue=1/2kx2 which is the same as the potential elastic energy equals half of the spring constant (which is different for each object which is being stretched or compressed) multiplied by the square of the distance the object is stretched or compressed

It may also be useful to know that these types of energy can be converted between as in the example of the dart gun. In that case, the gun converts between elastic potential energy when the gun is loaded and kinetic energy when the dart is released and is in motion.

Potential energy and kinetic energy. Potential energy involves the capacity to have energy (for example, gravitational potential energy), whereas kinetic energy is the energy of motion.

Why potential and kinetic are two main types of energy?

They are main types of energy as they are part of mechanical energy and everything is based on this type of energy as all other forms of energy they all are parts of these two energy and they contain these energy.

What are the two types of mechanical energy?

Potential energy and kinetic energy. mechanical energy is the energy of motion(kinetic energy)or the potential of motion(potential energy) so i would say-kinetic and potential energy

How is mechanical energy conserved?

It isn't. Sooner or later some mechanical energy will be wasted and converted to heat. It is also possible to convert other types of energy into mechanical energy. It isn't.
