Well it depends on the state that you live in. My state in Maine has started postponing or taking waiting lists of people for the program. As they are now not getting paid for the cars that they have brought in for clunkers..
The requirements are this for the most part.
Must be a running vehicle
Must have title of the vehicle
Must be willing to purchase or lease a brand new vehicle off of the lot.
Your clunker must be getting 18 miles to the gallon or less.
And last your clunker must not be road worthy at all.. unsafe to drive for whatever reasons that it cannot get inspection etc...
Careful though with this opportunity there are scammers that are taking advantage of this program.
And all though it was 1 billion dollars put out for this program and now another 2 billion dollars was thrown out there.. there are many dealerships here in Maine that are pending for the autos that they have brought in.
Also there is a few auto dealerships that have not bothered to do the program at all..
Also the vehicle that you are getting is under the approved CARS program.. you just cannot choose the most expensive vehicle there! There are certain vehicles with this program that are approved for this program.
Here is a website that will give you all the details and it is a government website as well. : www.cars.gov.
