Cleopatra's Needles are a name given to two ancient Egyptian obelisks of Aswan granite. They were originally displayed in front of the temple at Heliopolis. They were taken to Alexandria by the early Ptolemaic rulers. Cleopatra either had them moved to stand before the temple she built to Julius Caesar, or she built the temple behind them. At any rate, they remained in Egypt until 1877 when one was taken to England and the other was taken to New York.
